Job Description


Position:  Manufacturing Technician                                    Department:  Knapp

Reports to:  Innovation & Technology Lead                        FLSA Status: Hourly

Summary of Position

Under the direction of the Innovation & Technology Lead, this position is accountable for the design, integration and fabrication of manufacturing automation as well as the maintaining, setting up and calibration of manual and automated assembly equipment.  Act as a liaison between Design and production teams to implement new product development into production areas. Candidate must be able to interact with team members and customers to help aid requests for production demand and a customer service mindset is essential for this role. 


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work as a shared resource to monitor daily production line with Safety, Quality, Performance; Troubleshoot and Resolve technical issues in a timely manner so as to minimize downtime and support continuous flow of assembled products.

  • Must be able to repair manufacturing technology that uses electronics, robotics, hydraulics and / or electric systems for relay and solid state machinery that involves PLC’s.

  • Ability to identify and troubleshoot equipment breakdown.

  • Identify automation capital projects, complete business justification and manage facility automation projects from design, procurement, integration, run off through full production implementation including required ISO manufacturing documentation

  • Identify risk areas likely to cause equipment break-downs, participate in projects for the purpose of improving equipment reliability, process improvement, production efficiency, lean manufacturing, quality assurance, etc.

  • Troubleshoot, maintain, repair, set-up and program assembly electro-mechanical equipment, facilities equipment, molding machines and other equipment as needed.

  • Design and build new machines as capital projects require.

  • Must be able to work under minimum supervision and balance production support demands against capital project needs on a daily basis.

  • Participate in facility continuous improvement workouts.

  • Read and work from blueprints, schematics and bill of materials (BOMs) as needed.

  • Operate small hand and power tools such as hammer, wrench (open and closed), pipe wrench, punch, screwdriver, torque wrench, magnetic drill, pneumatic torque wrench, drill and other hand and power tools.

  • Maintain departmental housekeeping standards.

  • Perform job functions in a safe manner; know and follow established job specific and facility wide safety and health procedures.

  • Assigned special projects as business warrants.


Minimum Education & Experience Requirements


  • High school diploma or equivalent; preferred Associate’s degree from two-year college or technical school.

  • Electrical/mechanical experience required.

  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment with a proven track record of success.

  • Must be comfortable using computers and applications necessary to perform the job.

  • Read and work from blueprints, schematics and bill of materials (BOMs).

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Working & Environmental Demands

  • Occasionally required to work weekends as company needs demand.

  • Infrequently exposed to moving machinery such as forklifts.

  • Frequently exposed to loud noise from forklifts and machinery.

  • Occasionally exposed to temperature extremes in the warehouse.


Physical Demands


  • Peripheral Vision-ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point.

  • Depth Perception – Three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships.

  • Colour Vision – the ability to distinguish objects based on the wavelengths of light they reflect, emit or transmit for detecting and differentiating between objects.



  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.

  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.



  • Infrequently front carry up to 40 pounds.


Pushing and Pulling

  • Pushing/Pulling: Static Pushing and Pulling (Frequently) 25-pound force required to initiate box movement.


Ambulatory Activity

  • Standing/Walking (Frequently) on variable surfaces throughout entire shift in the facility.

  • Step up/down from 12-40” heights to reach products at variable heights in warehouse

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time


Repetitive Movement

  • Repetitive use of hand/grasping: (infrequently) Light to forceful manipulating/grasping of product, carts, doors.

  • Repetitive forward bending stand: (infrequently) Up to 32 inches in front of body at floor to 60” heights while reaching for product.

  • Forward bending standing: (Occasionally)

  • Reaching for and grabbing product for sorting (infrequently)

  • Squatting/Stooping/Kneeling: (infrequently) To as low as ground level while picking/stocking product.
